Clan Oliphant, with roots tracing back to David de Olifard who accompanied King David I, on a journey from Winchester in 1141, is a historically significant Scottish clan. The title of Lord Oliphant was conferred on Sir Lawrence Oliphant in 1458, a descendant of David de Olifard. The clan obtained lands in Gask and Aberdalgie from Robert I, and Sir Lawrence’s second and third sons established the Oliphant's of Gask and the Oliphant's of Ba Chilton respectively. The Oliphant's of Gask were ardent supporters of the Jacobite cause, with Lawrence Oliphant of Gask and his eldest son being attainted for their participation in the 1745 Rising.
