Clan Murray is one of the powerful and ancient Scottish clans, originating from the Pictish tribes of Moray. The clan name "Murray" is found in many regions of Scotland. The principal family of the clan descends from a man who received lands in Moray from David I. His grandson, William de Moravia, acquired lands in Bothwell and the south of Scotland and several of his sons established other significant branches of the family. Sir Andrew Murray was a celebrated patriot who organized a rising in Moray and fought alongside William Wallace at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297. His son, also named Sir Andrew, became the regent of Scotland after the death of Robert the Bruce in 1329.
