Clan MacRae, known in Gaelic as "Mac Rath" meaning "son of Grace," is believed to have ecclesiastical origins. The clan originally inhabited lands in the Beauly district during the 12th and 13th centuries before relocating to Kintail in the 14th century. Clan MacRae was notably involved in the Civil Wars, displaying exceptional bravery at the Battle of Sheriff Muir in 1715. Although the clan did not officially participate in the 1745 Jacobite Rising, many of its members joined the conflict individually. The MacRae's are remembered for their contributions to the preservation of Gaelic culture. Their steadfast loyalty to the MacKenzie's and their roles in significant historical conflicts have cemented their place in Scottish history.
