The Johnston Clan, originating in Annandale, Scotland, traces its lineage back to the 12th century. The clan's name is derived from "John's town," named after its progenitor, John Johnstone, who was granted lands by King David I. The Johnstone's became known for their fierce defence of the Scottish borders, often clashing with neighbouring clans, particularly the Maxwells. Involved in a number of border skirmishes, the clan established a reputation for resilience and martial prowess. Their influence grew, and by the 16th century, they held significant power in Dumfriesshire. The Johnstone's continued to play a prominent role in Scottish history, with notable figures such as Sir James Johnstone.
